Today is 8th March and everywhere there was a buzz about women’s day. I was personally wished by many women and even many men in regard to the women’s day. But I must confess that it really made me feel a little awkward. Why?

Oh! simply because although I am a hard core feminist from heart ………I refuse to adorn myself with a feminine touch.

Any women social right issues ……….and I could be the first one to come running to fight for justice. Drunkard husbands, Eve teasers, stalkers, molesters….I hate them all. But any attempt to give me a feminine touch ………And I know I’ll be the first one to run away. Lipstick, eyebrows, upper lips, earrings, dresses, nailpaint, waxing….uhhh…..never made sense to me ……..a total boycott from myside.

Nevertheless I am still a girly girl …..but I still feel awkward when people treat me like a so called women. Open the car door , pull out the chair at the dinning table, hold an umbrella for me , offer help to reverse the car !!!!!!!! ……………Oh please !!!!  I can do all that …..I don’t require that kind of display of etiquettes.

Coming back to the topic ….. Women’s day. I don’t know the history behind celebrating this day. And I wonder whether it actually helps celebrating days like these. Is it all about just having events, talks, seminars and shouting slogans ? What’s this women empowerment all about?

Amongst all the human sexes (I just realized that there are more than 2) Women are the most oppressed sex ……..that’s a collectively accepted fact. Now the question arises as to who is the oppressor ? Is it only the men? Let’s start from the father’s …..Hmm every father supposedly treats his daughter like a princess……but what about the other girls , the other women ? Are they treated with the same respect? or are they looked upon as whores ?

Then come our dear brothers …….blood Brothers , raksha bandhan brothers……Sisters are a part of their pride. What about the girl you eve tease ? the simpleton girl who you rag ? And what about the porn sites you visit ? ……dont they remind you that your sister has a similar structure. Is it impossible to suppress temptation?

Then come the husband’s …….I don’t have to say much. Domestic violence ? that’s a part of family life. The poor husband works so hard …..where else would he vent out his frustration. Does marriage give a man the right to rape his wife ? ……… Unfortunately yes.

Men at the workplace, men in the bus, men at the offices………It’s a men’s world…..and women are the entertainers. I guess we still do our job well .

But are men the only oppressors? What about women themselves? Let’s start with the mother’s now ………well I know, hers is the purest form of love……but somewhere she has been conditioned by society too. I still find mothers who push their daughters to learn all house hold chores…….. Irrespective of whether the poor girl is interested or not. I see how mother’s take pride in boasting about their daughters culinary skills. To me it sometimes seems like she is endorsing a product……a perfect home maker.

Why bring up your daughter as tough she has to be given away someday. Why start the discrimination at home…….or should I say the womb?.

What about the mother in law’s ?…..It’s never easy to view your daughter in law as your daughter, I understand……….But is it really impossible?.

In many instances I have seen women being worse oppressors than men. Be it at home, at work……or even on the street. It’s not always a men’s world afterall.

But finally another question arises ……..are women the only oppressed sex? Aren’t men oppressed to? Can we sideline them ……Just because it is not a collectively accepted fact?.

Boys from birth are taught not to be displaying their emotions publicly.

“Conceal ….. Don’t feel…… Don’t let them know”

“Hold back your emotion son, role back that tear ……… You’re a man……And man don’t cry ( wonder why God gave them tear glands?). I know of boys who loved playing with dolls with their sisters …….But they were given cars and guns. Isn’t this discrimination a form of oppression?

The first time I heard it , It took me a while to digest the fact that …….men too get raped. There even exist men prostitutes. But it is all hushed up …….Shhhh……..Men don’t cry.

We live in a world where it is no longer important to be a human. What is important today is …..Being a perfect man or a perfect women. We have evolved, we have become more feminine and more masculine ………And less humane.

You will be burnt at stake if you break the rule laid down by society………But if you get oppressed , all you can expect is a little sympathy and spectators to watch the show.

I can only hope that in times to come our outlook towards life changes. Everybody should be treated with respect: man, woman …..Transgender…… Everybody.

Women’s day …….8th March……The world engulfed in celebration…….While the oppressed continue to be engulfed in their pain.
